Ponceau 4R is a synthetic colorant used as food coloring agent. Also known by the names of Cochineal Red A, C.I. Acid Red 18, Brilliant Scarlet 3R, New Coccine, this is available in the form of red AZO dye. The major application of Ponceau 4R is in a variety of foodstuffs and snacks. It is mainly obtained from aromatic hydrocarbons as a downstream product of petroleum. The main composition includes trisodium 2-hydroxy-1(4-sulfonato-1-naphthylazo) naphthalene-6,8-disulfonate along with subsidiary coloring agents that are used along with sodium chloride/sodium sulfate as principal uncolored component.
